The fresco follows the Byzantine iconography of the period. The Greek letters X¯ C, for "Christos," appear at the top of the cross. There is an angel above each side of the crossbar. A thin stream of blood flows from just below Jesus' right breast. His pelvis juts to the right. John and Mary stand on either side of the cross, Mary in a long mantle. The cross sits on a small rise representing the hill of Calvary. All these are features of Eastern icons such as
